February 19, 2022 – Lithuanian runner Aidas Ardzijauskas who completed a virtual run around the globe in a world-record shattering 444 days, has also created a small piece of history as it was the first to be recorded on blockchain as an NFT.
Firefighter Ardzijauskas, (50), covered 30,303 km by completing the run in Lithuania, Denmark, Italy, and UAE due to pandemic restrictions - while progress was charted on a virtual map.
To validate the achievement, two GPS-recording devices were used at all times, with uploads to Strava and the runner’s website echorun.world.
This world record was significant in that it was first to be recorded on the blockchain as an NFT with an ambition to exhibit it in the metaverses and allow fans to own a piece of history.
Running enthusiasts behind two Lithuanian blockchain companies, BitDegree and Super How? have teamed up to develop an NFT collection of 444 pieces representing each run day, enriched with run data and memories. Collectively, they will combine into one world record globe-run NFT.
Proceeds of this world-record run NFT sale will be used for Ardzijauskas’s new running projects and the advancement of the ultra-running community. Sale details are yet to be announced as the team is currently searching for marketing partners and an auction house.
Blockchain is becoming a broader trend for sports brands globally. Nike acquired RTFKT to help launch digital collectables for the metaverse. Adidas has been active in the metaverse, buying properties in the Sandbox Game and launching NFT collections with some of the crypto-world top NFT brands.
Ardzijauskas hopes his achievement will not go unnoticed by the top sports brands and could be exhibited in their metaverse NFT galleries. He overhauled the previous world record set by Briton Kevin Carr, of 621 days to cover a distance equal to 26,232 km in 2015.
Endurance running maverick, Ardzijauskas, is now contributing to medical research on how such feats affect the human body. His previous achievements include first place in Self-Transcendence New York 2015 10 day run (1073km), first place in Self-Transcendence New York 2016 6 day run (860km) and Crossing USA 2014 Los Angeles-New York run of 5013 km in 62 days.
