Web3 aims to democratize the experience of being online, offering a valid solution to centralization and transparent technology concerns, but when it comes to gender inclusivity there remains room for improvement. Men dominate the nascent metaverse (all CEOs of the most prolific platforms such as Meta, Decentraland, Sandbox, Roblox and Fortnite are male) as they do in the crypto sphere: just 5% of the world's leading crypto companies are led by women, and a recent study showed that only 4% of NFT collectors were female.
As the CEO of female-centered Web3 fashion mobile game Fashion League, which will focus on increasing diversity in blockchain and gaming (to be launched this summer) I strongly believe there exists a number of opportunities to make Web3 more inclusive while it is still in its early stages of development by implementing the strategies below.
Access and education
To spread inclusiveness in a decentralized ecosystem, we need to have a greater focus on access and education so that women can play an integral role in the early formation of Web3.
Take for example the impressive work carried out by the Unstoppable Women of Web: a female-led movement focused on bringing more women into the fold by offering Web3 and blockchain-related educational opportunities and training resources. Or the work of BFF: a 100,000-strong community whose founding members include Gwyneth Paltrow and Mila Kunis that supports women in their growing knowledge of Web3 via events, NFT collections, comprehensive guides, explainer videos, Discord discussions, and much more.
Similarly, our shop simulation game Fashion League will not only be fun but educational — and all without using complicated technical jargon. We wanted to create a diverse and inclusive fashion metaverse with low entry barriers, which we will achieve through our play and earn model. Gamers can enjoy the novelties related to running their own online stores (such as crafting garments and taking care of customers' orders) all the while learning key financial fundamentals such as minting, buying, trading, staking and renting NFTs — as well as earning income at the same time. Our ecosystem rewards players through time spent and skills acquired in the game.
Focus on co-creation
I strongly believe in the importance of community co-creation: diverse voices are critical for innovation, mass adoption and ultimately, the longevity of Web3 projects. Fashion League will be led by its community and developed on the principles of decentralized management, giving players a say on new game content and optimization changes, as well as sharing our successes directly with players.
Highlight underrepresented voices
More male and female leaders within Web3 need to center their efforts on highlighting underrepresented voices in the sector. This is absolutely essential for promoting equality and leveling the playing field for all. We've directly experienced the positive impact of such actions, with Fashion League's advisory board strongly supported by leading industry figures in Web3 like Robby Yung from Animoca Brands, Thomas Vu from League of Legends and Beryl Li from Yield Guild Games.
How else can we show support? By sharing their stories and accomplishments within our own social media networks, including them in important decision-making discussions, and promoting female-led communities. The more people who join Web3, the greater the value for all involved.
To be a democratizing force for good grounded in innovation, creativity and opportunity for all, the time is now to start creating a Web3 experience truly designed and built for everyone.
