Latest news about Bitcoin and all cryptocurrencies. Your daily crypto news habit.
In 2017, former MLB player Jose Canseco predicted that bitcoin would be priced at over $10,000 by New Year’s Eve. Today in Crypto News, Jose Canseco warned his followers on Twitter to stay away from bitcoin because of its “pyramid scheme” style structure.
The 53-year old athlete has been surprisingly outspoken about bitcoin and crypto in the past. In some tweets, Canseco appears to praise bitcoin. In other tweets – like today’s tweet – Canseco seems to feel the whole thing is a giant scam.
Stay away from Bitcoin it has the same structure as any pyramid scheme but controlled by one individual
— Jose Canseco (@JoseCanseco) February 12, 2019
“Stay away from bitcoin it has the same structure as any pyramid scheme but controlled by one individual,” Canseco tweeted earlier today.
It’s unclear what prompted the tweet, which was sent just hours before Canseco tweeted that he can help tourists in Las Vegas meet a “real alien”.
Obviously, the narrative that bitcoin is controlled by any organization – not to mention a single person – isn’t true.
It’s possible that Jose Canseco encountered Satoshi Nakamoto and was able to confirm that Satoshi holds a secret backdoor to the bitcoin blockchain. It’s also possible Canseco has no idea what he’s talking about.
In any case, Canseco has a history of trolling the crypto space online.
“Cansecoin is launched! If u are a good ICO lawyer please get a hold of me,” tweeted Canseco on May 19, 2018.
The tongue-in-cheek tweet led to a brief flurry of headlines in May 2018 as media outlets weren’t sure whether or not to take the project seriously after Canseco published that tweet online. After that, however, there was no further news regarding the coin. It seems likely Canseco was just trolling.
It wasn’t the first time that Canseco had trolled his followers about Cansecoin. In November 2017, Canseco recommended his followers to “HODL” the non-existent cryptoasset.
In other tweets, Jose Canseco has mused about the structure of bitcoin, suggesting that it’s all a big scam. Here’s what he wrote in December 2017:
“Bitcoin is mathematically structured so a lot of people lose money and a small group will make a killing.”
Again, it’s not totally clear what Canseco is referring to here.
Jose Canseco is Bullish About Blockchain Technology
Jose Canseco must have lost a lot of money on bitcoin – because he clearly seems upset about BTC. Canseco, however, is more bullish on blockchain technology. He has tweeted about the advantages of blockchain technology several times:
“In 2018 blockchain will become mainstream knowledge understood by moron level and above,” explained Canseco in November 2017.
“In 2020, countries with digital based financial systems shall form the DEU – Digital Economic Union and Satoshi Nakamoto shall emerge as world leader.”
The former Oakland A’s outfielder clearly has a lot of thoughts about bitcoin and crypto, and he doesn’t mind sharing his alternative views with his 500,000 Twitter followers.
Jose Canseco’s tweet from later this afternoon, by the way, after tweeting about bitcoin this morning, read like this:
“Go on a Bigfoot and alien excursion with Jose Canseco….Come spend the day with me and my alien buddies I’ll show you bigfoot and a real alien.”
Your guess is as good as mine. In any case, the former MLB star who retired in 2001 is at least aware of crypto and bitcoin – now we just have to wait and see if Cansecoin ever launches.
