The latest version of the web browser Mozilla will be providing enhanced security to users. The new version 67 would also be blocking cryptocurrency miners by default. This general update aims at improving the security that users have while browsing the web.
The work has already started but it might take some time until it is applied to the browser. The launch date is scheduled for May 14 and the features will be released with the public in a short period of time.
Back in 2018, the company informed that they were concerned about blocking cryptocurrency mining scripts. Although the new update was expected to be launched with Firefox 63, it has been delayed.
Mozilla’s vice president of product, Nick Nguyen, commented about this situation:
“Some trackers fingerprint users – a technique that allows them to identify users by their device properties invisibly, and which users are unable to control. Other sites have deployed crypto mining scripts that silently mine cryptocurrencies on the user’s device. Practices like these make the web a more hostile place to be.”
He went on saying that Firefox will be blocking these practices by default. It is worth mentioning that during the bull market in 2017, new ways of stealing virtual currencies from users spread all over the internet. One of the most popular attacks was performed with CoinHive injections.
Users visiting some infected pages were using their CPU power to mine virtual currencies such as Monero (XMR) that can be mined with CPU power rather than with ASIC miners. Even YouTube or other governmental pages around the world were affected with CoinHive injections. With a large number of users mining with their CPU power at the same time, it was possible to mine cryptos without having to pay for electricity or hardware devices.
Another web browser, Opera, blocked cryptocurrency miners as well. Google has also tried to remove all the extensions that could have powered these mining activities.
