Before we rewrite our code using the Page Object Model, let’s make these tests a LITTLE MORE interesting. Let’s validate navigation for a link.
We are going to test that we can click on a link and it will navigate to the new page. On that new page, we will validate the navigation worked by looking for an item on that page. This time though, instead of manually testing that process, let’s be awesome,
LET’S AUTOMATE IT!
First, let’s figure out the EXACT steps the user needs to take to validate our test. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP OF THE PROCESS. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT. It allows us to think about how we want the browser to interact with the UI. These steps will help us write commands for the browser in our framework.
Going through it manually will ensure our code works better and breaks less. So let’s outline the commands that the browser needs to take.
Browser Commands — Sauce Labs’ Page
- Go to Sauce Lab’s website / Navigate to its URL
- Locate the link
- Click the link
Browser Commands — Sauce Labs’ Page Two
- Go to Sauce Lab’s Page Two / Navigate to that new URL
- Look for an item on that page
Let’s write our commands into a page object. Make a new directory called page_objects and a new Sauce Labs page object.

Per Nightwatch’s syntax, let’s use a standard object. At the top of the file let’s create a list of commands.

Let’s create 2 tests, one that validates that Sauce Labs’ page has loaded and one that validates Sauce Labs’ link. Let’s rewrite it to use our page object.
