Metis, which specializes in helping blockchain startups develop, has produced the first ever community-minted Non-Fungible Token (NFT), an artwork depicting “Rebuilding the Tower of Babel.”
The NFT artwork was created after 12,000 registered members of the Metis community entered a contest to create a Tribe and claim NFTs within each Tribe. During the process, thousands of interested users banded together to Trust different Tribes and generate enough mining power for the NFT to become eligible for future mining incentives. The first 256 eligible Tribes minted the final artwork (the combination of 256 puzzle pieces) and gained a share of the profits at sale.
The NFT was named “Rebuilding the Tower of Babel” to showcase the combination of the ancient Biblical concept of the Babylonian tower that explained the existence of diverse human languages with a futuristic cityscape and the sense of collaboration required to build the first ever community-minted NFT on Metis’ Layer 2 platform. Collaboration is a key feature of the Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) that Metis supports.
NFTs represent a fast-growing industry, providing the facility to tokenize and trade real-life assets like works of art. Metis launched this NFT project as part of the roll out of its Metis Layer 2 platform, which creates a more scalable, cost-effective and functional ecosystem for collaborative projects, allowing companies with little to no blockchain experience to build their own decentralized apps on.
The first phase of the NFT airdrop, scheduled to last five days, sold out in 97 minutes and the second phase, sold out in under 3 minutes. Now that the final NFT artwork is minted, it has been made available on the OpenSea auction platform, with 70 per cent of the proceeds generated by the artwork to be shared amongst the contributors and the original artist, Canadian designer Matt Vegh and his research lab Starcloud AI, receiving the final 30 per cent.
Elena Sinelnikova, CEO and co-founder of Metis commented: “Unlike other NFTs which are minted on behalf of a single artist, celebrity, or other individual, this project marks the first time a group of individuals have come together to produce a community-minted NFT. That gives this artwork a unique place in NFT history and makes it a far more valuable commodity for collectors and art appreciators considering an investment in the NFT space.”
